Normalisation via things like Replaygain and MP3Gain doesn't really
help in noisy environments, since they preserve the difference between
the loud and quiet parts within a song.

My old Rio Karma has an AGC (gain-riding) feature that is really useful
in the car/train/plane. It's the only portable player I know of that has
it - I'd be interested to hear of others.
