A lot of my music has accented Latin characters (acute, grave, umlauts,
circumflexes, etc.). I also work across platforms, doing all of my
ripping and tag editing in Windows and all of my music serving in
Linux. I've tried many times, but have yet to get the codepage issues
to successfully copy files with accented characters across platforms.
So now I try to make sure that my file and directory names are all
unaccented.

But I really like to keep the correct characters in the tags, which has
no problems with file copy operations because they're just data in flac
files. I rip in EAC and compress with flac, and have it set up in the
standard way, using the same artist, album, and title info to write the
tags and the directory and file names. Up until now I have been putting
the accented characters in, and then substituting the plain Latin
characters later, sometimes much later because they get lost in the
shuffle after some binge ripping.

Does anyone have a better way of doing this, for example, specifying
one accented set of fields for the tags and one near-equivalent
unaccented set of tags for the directory and filenames *at the time of
ripping/compressing*? Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom on
this.
