For those that are interested, I found explanations for the behavior that I am seeing. When secure mode is enabled (and perhaps when it isn't), the track is ripped to memory. This way, re-reads are easily applied. This is done on a track per track basis.
Well, the discs that were giving me trouble contained songs that were 40 min. long in some cases. The worst case was a disc that was as single track at 78 min. long (Klaus Schulze is notorious for this). These discs also were no in the accurate rip database. So I ran into the worst case scenario with the discs I was working with. Unfortunately for me it's not a rare case. The resolution is to upgrade memory. I'll have to think about it to see if the benefits brought by dbpoweramp are big enough to push me to upgrade my memory to 2 GB.
