id3v2.3 is not meant to have multiple TPE1 (ARTIST) tags, but a few apps do
support it (SqueezeCenter, Mp3tag and Foobar2000, for example). It is allowed
in the spec for id3v2.4.

With multiple ARTIST tags, other apps will only see the first artist, which can
be useful, but also dangerous (in that if those apps write the tags back to the
files, you will lose the extra artists as they didn't read them).

I store id3v2.4 tags, and store multiple artist tags. I don't use any other
apps other than Mp3tag and Foobar2000 for writing tags, so it's safe.

In some instances, I use the id3 BAND tag as the name of the band. eg.
ARTIST=Robert Plant, ARTIST=Jimmy Page, BAND=Page & Plant.
I include Bands in the Browse Artists list, so I can find music by either three
of the above names.
If you were to exclude Band from the artists list, you would find the album
under Robert Plant or Jimmy Page, not Page & Plant. But you can configure
SqueezeCenter to get the album to be denoted as either by the artists (Jimmy
Page, Robert Plant) or by the Band (Page & Plant). This is useful for Browse
Albums view.

Another thing to bear in mind is Album Artist tags. So, for the example above,
you could set an Album Artist tag to "Page & Plant", and it wouldn't be listed
under Robert Plant or Jimmy Page, ONLY the Album Artist.

I find it preferable to use a custom "ALBUMARTIST" (or "ALBUM ARTIST" if you
use 7.4, as this is what Foobar2000 uses) tag, and leave the interpretation of
TPE2 as BAND, but you could forfeit the benefits of having Band tags, and use
TPE2 as Album Artist (see Settings > Music Library for the option).
