I'm curious what the general consensus is on tagging strategy for Various Artist albums (using an example like "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" OST, and also for same artist compilations (ie. Greatest Hits albums). Perhaps this is two threads in one, but here goes:
1) Various Artist Albums (characterized by multiple, possibly unrelated artists - I won't get into multiple year, genre related Q's for now): -multiple artist tracks: use the ARTIST comment over and over? How is that treated in SBS? Does it list them all at once, scroll through them on the SBT display? Is each artist treated seperately in searches, or is Alison Krauss & Emmylou Harris a different artist than Alison Krauss? -do I need to denote this as a compilation? advantages? -is it really necessary to use "various" as the "album artist", or can multiple "artist" tags be used with the same effect? 2) Greatest Hits compilations (usually same artist, track vary in release years) -In my last library, I had gone through my "greatest hits" compilations and used the tag information from the album that the track originally appeared on. I understand that multiple "album" tags can be used, but is there any functionality to connect a certain piece of album art with a certain album, or is the album art considered to be just a collection of jpgs from a single album? Can multiple "year" tags be used? Thanks for any and all help. I'm building my FLAC library in anticipation of the upcoming SBT and want to get it right the first time.
