I noticed it still doesn't behave like I would expect. It turns out only FLAC albums popup in Various Artists. Setting COMPILATION=0 removes them from Various Artist but the album is relisted under ALL Track Artists.
The solution for me is entering a new extended tag ALBUMARTIST in mp3tag. In mp3tag I do see an Album Artist tag with FLAC files in the tagger and the columns. in Extended Tags it's listed as BAND!!! The option in server settings to toggle TPE2 as Band or Album Artist is not working on FLAC (which is logical but confusing).
