I'll take a shot at this... Some CD's have something called a pre-gap. If you watch your CD player's time display, sometimes you'll see it display -0:02, -0:01, 0:00... before it plays the song. This is a countdown. If you navigate directly to the track using the skip button, the pregap is skipped and the track played immediately.
When you rip the CD, I'm pretty certain this pregap is prepended to the file. If not, than it is appended to the previous track. Either way, it is actually appended to the file. For use with a squeezebox, this isn't an issue. But, if you are interested in recreating the CD in it's original form such that it will include the pregap information, you would have to rip the CD as a single file along with a cue sheet. The cue sheet includes information about where each track starts and ends as well as any pregap data.
