Among the many tools available in Mp3tag are what it calls 'actions'
for manipulating fields, file names, etc. These can be executed as
one-offs or saved in named 'action groups'. Examples of various action
types available are creating a new tagging field ('Format value'), or to
remove one or more fields ('Remove fields'). The 'Guess values' action
can take existing data from tagging fields and use the data to create
or modify other fields.
First, I'll assume you have more than one album tagged like this, so
that it will be worth creating and saving an Mp3tag 'action group' that
can be used on other compilation albums.
- Click the rghtmost Aa ('Actions') button.
- The dialog box that appears will contain all of actions that you
define and save over time on your computer. To create a new action
group click the topmost button with the star (New).
- Enter a name such as 'Fix compilations'.
- The next dialog box you see will contain all of the actions that
will be defined in this particular action group. You could have just
one, or many actions in the group. Click the New button again.
- Select 'Guess values' as the action type.
- Under 'Source format', enter '%title%' (with no quotes).
- Under 'Guessing pattern', enter '%artist% - %title%' (again, no
quotes). Hit OK.
- We'll add one more action to the action group, to set the
COMPILATION field.
- Hit New.
- Select 'Format value'.
- For 'Field' enter 'COMPILATION', for 'Formst string' enter '1'
(no quotes).
- Hit OK until you're back out to the Action Groups dialog, then the
Close button.
To _apply_ the action group to all files in view:
- Hit Ctrl-A to select all files.
- Hit the Aa button.
- Make sure the 'Fix compilations' action group has a check mark next
to it.
- Hit OK to apply.
You can also add a COMPILATION field to the Tag Panel on the left:
- Open Tools > Options (or use Ctrl-O).
- Select Tag Panel.
- Hit the New button.
- Set 'Field' to 'COMPILATION' and 'Name' to 'Compilation:'.
Now you'll be able to immediately see any file that has the COMPILATION
field set to 1 and be able to easily edit or remove the same.
It's best if you make a copy of the album that you plan on working on,
in case you make a mistake, so that you don't lose any data. Until you
have an action group fully tested and are confident that it works
correctly, that's always the safest strategy.
