+1 on dbpoweramp for ripping. Regarding SqueezePlay, I use this on my laptop and haven't had any issues with playing mp3 files (or FLAC files). Will these same mp3 files play OK with other players (itunes or WMP etc.) I assume you are talking about mp3 files and NOT AAC files purchased from Itunes in the past when they had DRM added.
