One free way is to use 'Audacity's' (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) "Amplify" function. Audacity opens all files as 32-bit floating point WAV. When you're finished modifying the file, just "Export" it to the format you want. Note that this will change the file data. An alternative is to open the original file in 'foobar2000' (http://www.foobar2000.org/) and apply ReplayGain tags. Squeezebox will read these tags if set to do so in its "Volume Adjustment" settings. "Smart Gain" is usually the best selection.
