There may be an artist sort tag in use already , that would explain the behaviour .
Did you check for other iterations like artist sort albumartistsort ,composer sort and more or simply album artist . The weird thing with LMS is that this tag need only to in one of the affected files and they are all sorted wrong . Yes LMS sort files depending on tags in other files, which IMO is a bug, but others sees it as feature ?
