I had been using a Behringer UFO202 to record from my Planar 3 turntable (directly connecting the turntable to the UFO202, then connecting the UFO202 to my MacBook via USB).
I just picked up a Rega Fono Mini ADC (£89), which works as both phono stage and provides a USB output to connect to the MacBook. What's nice is that you can adjust the output level (output from the UFO202 was a little low). In both cases I've been using Audacity to capture the audio stream and do any processing and tagging before exporting files as flac.
