All,
On Thursday (3/13), during our regular lunchtime 12-1 slot in 200C
Warren Hall, we'll hear from Patrick Schmitz and Chris Hoffman about
highlights from the ECAR annual meeting
<http://www.educause.edu/events/ecar-annual-meeting-2014> they attended
in late January. (ECAR is the Educause Center for Analysis and
Research.) In addition to reporting back on particular sessions and
information of interest, Patrick and Chris will convey what we at
Berkeley get from attending this type of meeting at which university
staff from a wide range of campuses publish and share ideas and
developments across institutional 'borders.'
Before the meeting, please review these materials suggested by Patrick
and Chris:
* Susan Grajek's slide deck on The Current State of Research Computing
in Higher Education
<http://www.educause.edu/events/ecar-annual-meeting-2014/2014/current-state-research-computing-higher-education>
(deck is linked from page, a large PPT; direct link
<http://www.educause.edu/sites/default/files/library/presentations/ECAR14/SESS01/The%2BCurrent%2BState%2Bof%2BResearch%2BComputing.pptx>).
Best to focus on the core data info -- starting at slide 15, with
sections on staffing, services, and expenditures; and on the maturity
model, starting at slide 40.
* The ECAR Total Cost of Ownership for Cloud Services (ECAR-TCO) Working
Group charter
<http://www.educause.edu/ecar/ecar-working-groups/total-cost-ownership-cloud-services-working-group>
* Gerry McCartney's talk about the "Community Cluster" at Purdue
University
<http://www.educause.edu/events/ecar-annual-meeting-2014/2014/better-removing-your-appendix-spork-developing-faculty-research-partnerships-purdue-univ>
(slide deck is linked from page, a large PPT; direct link
<http://www.educause.edu/sites/default/files/library/presentations/ECAR14/SESS08/ECAR%2BMcCartney%2B01%2B29%2B2014.pptx>).
This talk will be most interesting to those involved in the emerging BRC
program, but for everyone else is illustrative of how much rich
information is available at the ECAR meetings.
Optionally, these session videos from CNI are topical for next week as well:
Creating a Data Interchange Standard for Researchers, Research, and
Research Resources: VIVO-ISF, Dean B. Krafft & Brian Lowe (Cornell)
http://youtu.be/s4WamVOmdhk
Accuracy in Web Analytics Reporting on Digital Libraries, Kenning
Arlitsch & Patrick OBrien (Montana State U.), Martha Kyrillidou (ARL)
http://youtu.be/vmFSRZUZwB8
See you Thursday!
Steve
