Robert - Wait to hear back from Fred on this one to be sure it's the right thing to do, but I ran into a similar situation when I set up a Rivendell "basement box" automation system at home.
My problem got resolved by doing two things: 1) Making sure I'm in RD as the proper host. Recently, while trying out a Live CD of some distro I found on the web, I discovered it had changed the machine's hostname. That probably did not happen to you, but its real easy to lose out on several features when you are not the host that RD was expecting. 2) Get the updates. Right after my own installation, I found I could not import any MP3 files. When the the CentOS "update" box popped up in the lower right corner, I downloaded both the latest updates of LIBMAD and RIVENDELL (and *only* those). Worked fine after that. Only other thing I might suggest is checking whangamarine in another player to see if it opens and plays properly. Maybe renaming it something simpler and importing it again would work. Others will be along shortly with more ideas. These are what worked for me.
