Thanks to Cowboy who replied to my problem. Ended up getting alamixer back by making the following changes to alsa-base.conf in Ubuntu 10.04. options snd-ice1712 index=1 #options snd-hda-intel index=0 options snd-hda-intel model=generic Thanks Warren
