The moment I start the GUI, even as a non-root user, the machine locks up. It doesn't do this every time, but perhaps 60% of the time. There are no log entries anywhere in /var/log that seem to correspond to the lockups.
I'm guessing the lockup problem is connected with Intel HD graphics hardware.
