Gregg, I personally agree with most things you say, and would like to add; Jini started as a "we are going to solve all things distributed", and there was a huge expectation that Jini would be a natural extension of the JDK, especially in the embedded market (which I think was the reason for initial licensing chosen). That, we now know, didn't happen and IMHO it is "fine" that Jini/River is not as big as, or competing with, Java EE and XML based web services. And the sooner those 'ambitious plans' are kicked out of the head, the sooner we can get moving forward again. Now, the main problem right now is lack of energetic individuals, those that most Apache projects have, who "drives" the project, meaning the one(s) that contribute a large portion of the overall new code. It is great to see the new blood grabbing important issues, like the test kit, and I hope these have the energy to expand beyond the obvious. And people like you Gregg are really important to support the progress and give the helping hand, both in terms of getting/keeping all the nitty gritty details in check as well as a wealth of on-the-field experience of what works, what is common, et cetera.
