Xuid directory used a distributed hash.
Something like this would be very useful when utilised in a Global or internet domain for River.

RemoteReference which was part of the Neuromancer project was used as a
way of locating Remote Objects as they move from machine to machine by
utilising an Xuid, a class similar to Uuid, but with a higher likelihood
of being unique and contained information that allowed the originating
authority of an Object to be determined.
