Just realized you're on vacation. I'm going to try this with the subversion code to see if it yields better results.

I see you're now using the ol' configure, make, make install. That's great. Unfortunately though, I'm running into some trouble compiling 0.5.0 on Fedora Core 4 with GCC 4.
 
make ends with:
