i think i've found a solution that's both precise and easy, and without 
additional dependencies: looking for the source where lsb_release would 
actually look for the information, i discovered /etc/lsb-release which is part 
of the necessary package "base-files". i'll grep for "hardy" or "8.04" in that 
file to discover the distribution, and we're done :-)
