This seems like an encoding problem. Can you provide the output of (from a terminal) $ file -i yourfile.r Then from the rkward session, > Sys.getlocale () Can you open the file correctly in gedit (assuming you are using Ubuntu and not Kubuntu) and then in kate / kwrite?
