saltare'
mersi in avans

Subject: Re: Adaptec AAA-131U2 RAID
Hello,
Thank you for your reply. I have more questions about RAID and
motherboards. If you can find the time to offer any information you can it
would be greatly appreciated.
Currently I've got a Mylex AcceleRAID 250 (with the i960RD chip), and it is
well supported in Linux. However, it requires a mainboard that supports the
I2O (intel's Intelligenbt Input/Output) architecture, which I believe was
supported in some of the 440* chipsets.
Currently, I've got two AMD mainboards (both ASUS brand, models P5A and
K7V), and neither mainboard even gets to the POST (power on self test)
screen of the BIOS with the AcceleRAID 250 plugged in. (This was when I
suspected there was a hardware compatibility issue ;)
I'd strongly prefer to get a RAID5 card that works in an AMD system, as I
currently own that hardware. Do you know of any RAID5/Ultra2/LVD
controllers that work on a 32-bit PCI bus, and don't require I2O chips, and
are also supported by Linux.
If I have to, I'll break down and buy an intel mainboard with I2O support.
Do you know what chipsets support I2O so I can cross reference with the
model specs of various mainboards? If I go intel, I want a PIII/Socket370
(coppermine), but I don't know much about the intel chipset family, as I've
been using AMD only for the past few years.
FYI: This RAID5 card is for "my first web server". I've built a few PCs,
done some PC tech work, now trying my hand at an entry-level web server. I
hope to virtual-host a few dozen websites, and provide database and
application services for small-scale ecommerce or whatever, and php-driven
web-based user interfaces for admin control panels. Probably charge a
minimal monthly fee for admin duties and connection costs via co-location,
at least until I hit a break-even point.
I've already got 3x18GB Seagate Cheetah drives (10k RPM, 2MB buffer cache,
Ultra2, LVD, 80-pin SCA, etc.) and plan to connect them to either a
backplane, or a drive shuttle of sorts. The RAID card would connect to the
backplane or drive shuttle via 68-pin internal connector -- as soon as I get
a case/mainboard/shuttle/cables. ;-)
That's about it... any help at all is welcome! Thanks for your time.
