I get a 35719 byte file named redhat9.torrent.  If this is a "metafile" 
what's the extension of
the "real" file?  How do I get the "real" file?  I think I'm willing to 
put in about another 10 minutes on this.

Try the ncurses client (btdownloadcurses.py) instead. And don't run the
tracker if you're not serving files.
