Craig,

The easiest BSD to use is Mac OS X. The downside is that you have to buy
some really expensive hardware to run it.

On the x86 side, I highly recommend FreeBSD 5.1. It has the easiest
installer of the big 3 (Openbsd, Netbsd, Freebsd), and has the most
software support. I've found that at least 85% of the [free|opensource]
software out there will run natively on Freebsd, and almost all the rest
will run with it's Linux compat libraries. FreeBSD will also run BSDI,
SCO/Xenix, Coherent, and x86 Solaris binaries (with some minor trickery).

You can buy Freebsd as a 4 CD set from:
http://www.freebsdmall.com (directly sponsors the project)
http://www.bsdmall.com/ (cool cover art!)

Or just visit freebsd.org and look up how to do an install over the
Internet. You can also get ISO images from the main site too.

A note about the vendors I linked to; I've delt with both of them a lot
over the past 4 years and they are really great people -- they are
interested in helping the community.

Perhaps it is time for a /Freebsd Install Fest/?

Mark
