Cheops-ng is what I'm trying to use. It sounds like you're saying that Cheops has more 
functionality that cheops-ng? Maybe I should just fall back to that.

        Are you trying to run cheops or cheops-ng?  I've was able to get
        cheops-ng to run under Gentoo without doing anything "special".  From
        the cheops-ng site, "Cheops-ng's and Cheops' functionality only differ
        in that cheops-ng does not have monitoring capabilities yet."  Plus
        cheops-ng is being worked on and supported while cheops is not.  As far
        as the error you are getting, sadly (or perhaps happily for me) I have
        no experience with.
