eMachines sells a laptop for around $800, give or take. If that's not your
idea of cheap, you can either buy an old, used laptop (rarely a good idea
IMHO) or buy an inexpensive desktop instead.

Note that "manufacturer refurbished" computers are rarely the excellent
deals they once were, either. It used to be that a refurbished PC was much
cheaper, but now they knock a hundred bucks or so off for what amounts to
an almost-obsolete system.

If you pay less than $800-900 for a laptop, or less than $300-400 for a 
desktop, you're going to be scraping the bottom of the barrel, and may 
well end up paying more in the long run. YMMV.
