For those of you who missed it this first time around, I'm doing the ssh
talk again at DRI on Thursday, 2pm. Since work is paying for doing this, I
spent a lot more time on diagrams and making things look pretty. Here is
the official announcement:
The Advanced Computing in Environmental Sciences (ACES) announces its
eight tutorial titled "SSH For New and Advanced Users" to take place
this Thursday, May 26th, from 2:00 to 3:00pm.
SSH is a protocol that allows remote login sessions to other computers
much like the classic telnet or rlogin programs. The first part of the
talk will cover day to day use, such as how SSH gives more security to
remote connections by using high-grade encryption to transmit login
names, passwords, and any data transmitted during the session. Also, how
SSH gives even more power by allowing secure ftp and file copy
transactions without the risk of compromising sensitive data.
SSH goes far beyond allowing just remote connections to machines, and
the second part of the talk will cover more advanced concepts such as
how to remove the often annoying requirement of having to type passwords
but without sacrificing security, along with how to forward network
ports, X11 fowarding, tunneling, and speed optimizations.
This tutorial will be geared toward both scientists and administrators
new to ssh, and to those who have used ssh for a while and are ready to
learn some new tricks. This will be a live demo and slide-based talk.
The presentation will be given in the ACES VisLab at DRI in Reno. The
talk will also be available via the Access Grid, and will be viewable at
UNR SEM, DRI SNSC, and the UNLV Lied Library. For more information on
the Access Grid, visit the following URL:

If you would like to attend the tutorial or would like more
information, please, contact Mark Ballew ([EMAIL PROTECTED], 775-673-7322).
