Thanks for the info everyone. They all work. However - I just blew things up and need some additional help.
I'm running Ubuntu on this machine which means unless you explicitly set up root with its own password everything is done as a user with sudo privileges. Dummy that I am - when I was attempting to add a group to my user account - I blew out all the others - which also blew out my ability to use sudo. As I said - "root" does not yet have a separate login & password. So. How can I repair this?
