my 2 cents:

(A) just follow your favorite partitioning religion. i haven't used
ubuntu's partition resizer, so i can't comment on that

(B) ReiserFS is great

(C) GRUB. ubuntu should automatically detect Windows and give you an
option to boot into it

OK, I think I am sold, but I'd like some advice on
(A) drive partitioning, (B) which file system, and
(C) which boot loader to use.

(A) Drive partitioning

I have a 20Gb HD now partitioned into 3 slices
with FAT32.

s1 primary 8.4Gb Windows ME boot partition
s5 logical 8.4Gb Windows
s6 logical 3.6Gb Windows

s5 & s6, while known by Windows, are trashable.
The ubuntu web site suggests a minimum of 10Gb
for linux and a 500Mb partition for swap. I think
I would use s5 and s6 as 10Gb (linux) and 1gb (swap)
with 1.6Gb left over for a FAT32 partition for
Windows.

Will I be able to add the 1.6Gb partition (I am
used to having 7/8 entries on the vtoc for SCSI
devices - this is IDE)? Will I have to trash the
Windows partition and restore it from the backup
(yes, ubuntu does have an option to copy data
from another partition when sizing the current
partition)?

(B) Which filesystem?

Ubuntu gives me a lot of choices and none of them
say UFS.......

Ext3
Ext2
ReiserFS
JFS
XFS
FAT32

Which one would be a good choice, or, what is the
best online URL for research on this?

(C) Which boot loader to use?

Brandon suggested "smart boot manager" because of
my problem with the CD drive that I have fixed.
Ubuntu gave me two other choices: LILO and another.

Advantages/disadvantages to them?

Just installed Ubuntu Breezy snapshot on both my desk and laptop. Works like a charm, both places. One hoop to jump through: mplayer and playerplug-in.

Enable all their repositories by using Synaptic. Add
deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat unstable main

to the apt list. Download and install libdirectfb-0.9-20_0 (find on Google; Ubuntu uses another version, but you can leave it and install the other); download mplayer-plugin (can download the rpm and convert with alien). Other than that, all the other stuff you might need's in the Ubuntu repositories.

Uses Gnome 2.11.92. Gnome's come a long way.

The installer for Ubuntu 5.04 is the Debian installer. It'll show all the other operating systems you might have on your machine at startup. Never tried resizing partitions with it, but probably delete and recreate is the best route.

Have fun.
Bill
