Ubuntu doesn't come with any open ports, so you have to install ssh,
samba, etc. Just apt-get update and apt-get install or, better yet, use
Synaptic, search and find what you want, and tell it to install.
If you need help with the media files, let me know

Thanks to all the RLUG members who offered their advice. I have a
working installation now and I did it without messing up my Windows
partition. :)
I used EXT3 for the file system and I was able to create partitions
after I deleted the extrra Windows partitions. GRUB is the boot
loader. ALSA for interfacing with the SoundBlaster Live! card.
Well, I know the adventure is only starting, since each new discovery
leads to others to solve: SAMBA server, SSH server, plugins for media
files, etc.
But, it sure does feel good to use the command line again!
