For those interested in upgrading their systems, I just put in four new
64-bit (AMD based) computers for under $400 each. This included
motherboard, case, power supply, CPU, RAM, SATA HDD, gigabit ethernet,
video card, audio, and a DVDRW/CDRW drive. They aren't "extreme machines"
but they are pretty cheap. Let me know if you're interested in the specs,
and I'll send them to you.
I know $400 may be out of reach for a limited budget, but if you send me
what you'd be willing to spend I'll design a machine, or spec some parts
that will fit in your budget.
Joan, your CD burning offer gives me another idea... if anyone has $5 to
spare please donate it to the group (see Jeff's earlier post). I'd like
to buy several stacks of CDs so that we can burn ISOs for anyone
requesting them. I have a fat pipeline to my machine at school that we
can use to download images. I also have plenty of space to store them.
My offer to download images stands whether we purchase CDs or not. I'm
always willing to consume some of UNRs bandwidth ;) Just let me know what
you'd like. In the meantime, I'll see if I can find an Internet 2 mirror
so that we can download files REALLY fast.

Hi all,
What we need is for a computer store to allow us to
put on a hardware SIG maybe? We will no doubt find we
need last minute parts after all. Plus after seeing
it done the store might get return visits for
upgrades.
I know I can't afford to buy my needed upgrade parts
all at once as I'm on limited income. I only want a
faster motherboard, (P4 1gig+ or AMD) CPU, RAM, P/S
and video card for trying my hand at a Webserver setup
behind my DSL router.
I've sent Bob a message offering to burn CDs for him,
too. Any other folks need some help getting LiveCDs,
I've tried most of them.
Thanks,
Joan
