I'd say Ubuntu as well, but if it still slower than you'd like take a
look at Xubuntu (http://www.xubuntu.org/) which is based on Ubuntu but
uses the much lighter Xfce desktop environment rather than Gnome or KDE.
It is specifically designed for older computers.
