OK...
Lemmie describe whats been done so far.....
The box started out with. AMD 1000 w/256m ram, 40gig and a 6gig drive.
External modem, etc. etc. With windozeXP on it. (we were going to have
win2000 put on and split the big drive but the moron that worked on it
before me did'nt listen and XP'd it all one partition) Did'nt give him a
disk either for when it takes a dump. Now back to what I did....
Figgured I'd be carefull and just take over the 6gig which had somehow
came back as the slave. (did'nt start out that way) I installed Xandros
3.01 open circulation on it looked good. Then we got to talking about
the new Ubuntu and he liked the concept so tried to slap that on, 1/2
way thru it hung and the little 6gig puked. I replaced it with another
40gig (now have 2 40gig drives much better)
Soooo I went back to the Xandros disk cause it worked the first time and
I wanted him to take a look at it and see how it feels. It also has a
CrossOver Office demo I thought might be a good thing to look at too.
I cut it up as follows: 6.5gig / 300m swap and the left over 32gig or so
for /home. It loaded up without a hitch. Looked good, I setup tried
setting his dialup and ran into a snag. Dials in and dumps connection.
I have something screwed up on my end but ran out of time to play with
it. I usually run Mandrake or Suse and I'm used to getting KPP working.
This one is a bit different on this distro so I'm lurching out of my
turf a bit.

Oh, that was Quickbooks that he uses......

Dual Boot:
First you need *two* partitions on one hard drive, or *two hard drives*.
Second, it is important for Windows to exist on one of these
partitions or hard drives *before* installing Linux. I say this for
those that need to do a clean install of both OS's, always install
windows first, saving the best for last. The Linux install process
will detect the other OS and set up a the boot loader, giving you an
option as to which OS to load.
Which distro.. I am currently using SuSE and I am pretty happy with
it. He might want something more like Linspire, which has support
built in for many media codecs (though I would choose OSS formats, it
is probably not what he wants).
Accessing windows apps from the Linux side is usually a bit more
difficult with a dual boot. I'm not sure which accounting app he
uses, if it's quicken, he may rather look into an alternative, like
Gnucash, or he may prefer to have a separate PC, and use VNC for quick
access to windows and apps needed.

I'm trying to set a friend up with a dual boot box. Need Input on a
distro to set him up with. He wants to move to Linux but he needs a
fairly dummy proof distro. (he be basic toaster operator) Also thinks
he needs to be able to access some Windoze apps from the linux
side.... Like that popular accounting program they like to use. I'm
not up on this as I just don't spend any time trying to do ANYTHING
in windoze. I think he needs a better mentor than me at this. I run
in my little nitch and don't get out of it much due to time
constraints and such. Any suggestions, tips, help. Anyone semi close
to the Stage Coach area?
ALSO!
He is looking for someone to set up a web page for a product
liquidation business he is setting up. I told him I thought there
might be someone in the group that does that kinda work and if so
could end up with a true ANY browser is good here page. Anyway, he is
looking for quotes to that effect and maybe for hosting too.
