One of those minimal gray cell moments. I was looking for an
alternative to SuSE and I ran across a link to Sabayon Linux (Italian
distro) on the Groklaw site. As a noob that's wanted to try Gentoo but
couldn't afford the time or the learning curve I recommend this
distro. It just felt good from the moment I installed it.(installs a
GUI) ;-)

I'd say go with Ubuntu. Mandriva and Fedora Core 6 worked pretty well
for me as well.
