BTW, I just thought of one thing: APEv2 tags are searched for AFTER seeking for id3v1, so rockbox already is at the end of the file when it looks for APEv2. note that my patch doesn't look for APEv2 if id3v2 was found, so it won't consume more power for those power-savvy people who use id3v2.

Please refresh my memory. Why is APEv2 tags better than id3v2?

IMHO, APEv2 is worse, since it requires seeking to the end of the file to find the tag, which takes longer and consumes more power.
