One more of these longstanding wishlist things :)
I find it hard to guess if this is about the right amount of work for
gsoc. Thoughts?

Such a thing would be very welcome I think. I'd say compiling the tests
into the main binary is best, so we don't have to add too many wrappers
or bindings, while at the same time allowing to test absolutely
everything. 

The first part of this project would probably be to design and discuss
the thing
