A rocket is unlikely to get better performance than a Quadra running with a slim system. Additionally, it is limited in what system OSes can run on the host Mac and on the Rocket. Be sure neither of these things will sink your project.

All else being equal, my RocketMac (no longer alive, unfortunately) ran the rockets somewhat slower than my 840AV. The 840AV had more RAM (rockets has 32 megs, it had 36 -- not a major difference), and a SLIGHTLY higher clock speed, but there it is.

Ultimately, the Q800 is, if I remember correctly, the 2nd fastest '040 Mac ever made. If your program runs poorly on it, it's likely to run poorly everywhere. Your time may be better spent looking to max out the RAM in your Mac and trim down the system to the most basic requirements so that there's no competition for resources. If it runs under System 7.1, that's a good bet.

Hi - I'm new to the list.

I'm considering buying a Rocket Stage II (or more) to run legacy 68xxx Mac OS software on a host vintage Mac. That particular application cannot run on a PowerPC processor in emulation mode - I've tried them all, from a 6100 running 7.xx to a PowerBook G4 running 9.2x under Classic. It seems to require direct interaction with the hardware, hence the need for a real 68k chip under the hood.

I've had it running on one or two 68xxx machines but I found them really slow for this app (a Quadra 800 was barely adequate). I noticed that the Rockets seem to run as independent Macs, utilizing the host Mac mostly for I/O operations. Am I mistaken in assuming that I could get the most speed from a RR Stage II running this app while the host Mac does the chores rather than by running it directly on the fastest 68xxx Mac available?

And if so, what would be the top-performing host/card combination? I own a Mac II and a Mac II fx, but also a PMac 7100/80. If the performance of the NuBus is critical, and if the performance of the host's I/O operations is also important, assuming the note I read on LowEndMac is correct that a RR Stage II will run on a NuBus PMac with RocketShare 1.3x, wouldn't that be the best deal (I'm assuming the card fits)?

Thanks for any thoughts,

Phil Slade
