The term “bit,” which is found in the titles of the three main works on display at the Edith Russ Site for Media Art – bit.fall, bit.flow and bit.code – represents the infinitesimal, invisible units of data flowing through the Internet and other digital media, out of which our information is formed. In bit.code, Popp concretizes these bits as mechanically moveable, white and black elements; in bit.flow, they become individual parts of a red liquid running through transparent tubes. In bit.fall, the central work of Popp’s solo exhibition, the process is especially remarkable. Here, the bits are drops of water steered by a very precise, digital control system into individual jets of water that form letters as they fall, thus creating words in Popp’s incredible waterfall. It is fascinating and seems physically impossible to be able to use a liquid to present something manifesto-like, something that actually is already gone as soon as it has been seen for an instant. Even before one has a chance to properly reflect on what has happened, the next word appears, and it likewise dissolves immediately. Inevitably, the sensation arises of having missed connections, of being unable to keep up with an endless text. The result is a very direct visualization of the streams of data in our media society, a visualization of how information is generated, consumed and used. The falling words, which seem unrelated, are generated through an algorithm that filters them out of the Internet. Digital data with no substance at all receive a tactile, analog form, yet remain just as fleeting as ever and barely accessible as they present themselves in the global network. The exhibition is supported by the Bremer Landesbank.
