Die Initiative der Kulturstiftung des Bundes »40jahrevideokunst.de –
Digitales Erbe« zielt auf die Rettung, Pflege und Vermittlung des
kulturellen Erbes der Videokunst, die zu einer der einflussreichsten
Gattungen der Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts geworden ist. Erstmalig in der
Bundesrepublik wird ein so komplexes Vermittlungs- und
Ausstellungsprojekt gemeinsam von fünf Museen umgesetzt: das ZKM
Karlsruhe und K21 Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen Düsseldorf als
Projektverantwortliche in Zusammenarbeit mit den Partnern Kunsthalle
Bremen, Lenbachhaus München und Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig.
Im Sommer 2004 wurde von einer Jury eine exemplarische Auswahl von 59
historischen aber auch aktuellen Videotapes von 1963 bis heute
zusammengestellt. Diese Auswahl wird nun als Archiv parallel in den fünf
beteiligten Museen ausgestellt. Darüber hinaus präsentiert jedes Museum
einen eigenen Schwerpunkt als Erweiterung und Kontextualisierung dieser
Videotapes.
Zum Initiativprojekt der Kulturstiftung des Bundes erscheint ein
umfangreicher farbiger Katalog hrsg. von Rudolf Frieling und Wulf
Herzogenrath im Hatje Cantz Verlag mit Ausschnitten aller Werke auf
DVD-ROM. Eine DVD-Studienedition mit allen Arbeiten in voller Länge ist
aus Copyright-Gründen allein Institutionen aus den Bereichen Bildung,
Lehre und Forschung vorbehalten und kann über die Website

Die Kunsthalle Bremen präsentiert mit Videoskulpturen und -environments
die erste experimentelle und schöpferische Phase der Medienkunst in den
1960er Jahren:
Bedeutende Werkgruppen von Nam June Paik, Wolf Vostell, Joseph Beuys und
Karl Gerstner sind ebenso zu sehen wie Dokumente zu ersten
TV-Produktionen, u.a. von Otto Piene, Aldo Tambellini und Gerry Schum.
Mit Paiks Videosynthesizer von
1969, den die Kunsthalle Bremen seit 1995 zu ihrer Sammlung zählt, ist
auch die „Gutenberg-Bibel des 20. Jahrhunderts“ in der Bremer Schau
vertreten.

Die Düsseldorfer Ausstellung konzentriert sich auf unterschiedliche
Positionen künstlerischer Videopraxis in den 1980er Jahren in
Westdeutschland. Signifikant vollzieht sich in diesem Jahrzehnt die
Entwicklung von der Monitorpräsentation zur Rauminstallation.
An der Schwelle zur digitalen Bildproduktion etabliert sich Video als
bildkünstlerisches Verfahren und wird zugleich zur dokumentarischen
Aufzeichnung genutzt. Gezeigt werden ausgewählte Beispiele der
Videokunst der 80er Jahre in eigens entwickelten Präsentationsformaten
u.a. von Abramovic´ /Ulay, Conradt/Jahn, Dellbrügge & de Moll, Dieter
Froese, Ingo Günther, Jean-François Guiton, Dieter Kiessling, Marcel
Odenbach u.v.a.

Die Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus zeigt UPDATE 06 und präsentiert 6
Positionen zeitgenössischer Kunst, die sich mit dem Medium ‚Video’ und
‚Film’ auseinandersetzen. Die Auswahl steht sowohl für die Vielfalt und
Internationalität, als auch für die große Bandbreite, mit der
unterschiedliche filmische Techniken in der aktuellen Kunstproduktion
genutzt werden. Gezeigt werden Arbeiten u.a. von Sunah Choi, Christian
Jankowski, Karolin Meunier, René Pollesch, Markus Sixay, Sean Snyder.

Die Edition »40jahrevideokunst.de« konzentriert sich bei der
Künstlerauswahl und dem historischen Kontext auf West- Deutschland.
Jedoch gab es auch in der DDR eine umfangreiche künstlerische
Medienarbeit. Gedreht wurde auf Schmalfilm. Inoffizielle
Eigenproduktionen entstanden. Eine eigenständige Kunstsprache als
Parallelphänomen zur Videokunst in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland
entwickelte sich. Das Ausstellungsprojekt unternimmt eine Revision der
turbulenten und kreativen 1980er Jahre in der Schmalfilmszene der DDR.
Gezeigt werden Arbeiten u.a. von Lutz Dammbeck, Else Twin Gabriel, Jörg
Herold, Via Lewandowsky, Yana Milev, Ulrich Polster. In begleitenden
Veranstaltungen werden eine Auswahl von „Underground-Filmen“ gezeigt.
Gespräche mit Künstlern und Zeitzeugen reflektieren die Arbeiten in
ihrem Kontext.

Die Ausstellung am ZKM präsentiert die gesamte Edition, ergänzt durch
den Schwerpunkt auf Restaurierung und Konservierung sowie die
technischen Hintergründe zur Bewahrung früher Videokunst. Der Fokus wird
hierbei auf den 1960er und 70er Jahren liegen, da die Videobänder aus
dieser Zeit besonders gefährdet sind. Aus den frühen 70er Jahren werden
authentische Geräte gezeigt. Ebenso Restaurierungsbeispiele anhand von
Arbeiten in ihrer ursprünglichen und in ihrer restaurierten,
digitalisierten Form. Ausgestellt werden darüber hinaus Werke, die
seit den 70er Jahren so nicht mehr zu sehen waren und im ZKM eine
erstmalige Wiederaufführung erfahren.

Die Publikation bietet einen konzisen Überblick über sämtliche
bedeutenden historischen wie zeitgenössischen Tendenzen in der
Videokunst einschließlich der frühen Anfänge in Film und Fernsehen und
stellt 59 herausragende Einzelarbeiten vor, die seit den 1960er Jahren
bis ins Jahr 2004 in Deutschland entstanden sind. Sie wird von einer DVD
begleitet, die Ausschnitte aller Arbeiten zeigt und weiteres
Begleitmaterial zum Werkkontext. Zusätzlich bewerten Kunsthistoriker,
Kuratoren und Philosophen vergangene wie gegenwärtige Strategien des
Umgangs mit bewegten Bildern, darunter Fragen der Präsentation,
Konservierung und Restaurierung von Videokunst.

40YEARSVIDEOART.DE – PART 1
The initiative of the German Federal Cultural Foundation
«40jahrevideokunst.de – Digital Heritage» focuses on saving,
maintaining, and mediating the cultural heritage of Video Art, which has
become one the most influential art forms of the twentieth century. For
the first time, such a complex, mediating and exhibiting project is
carried out by five museums in the Federal Republic of Germany: ZKM
Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe and the K21 Kunstsammlun
Nordrhein-Westfalen Düsseldorf, the institutions responsible for the
overall project, work together with three partners – Kunsthalle Bremen,
Lenbachhaus Munich, and the Museum of Fine Arts Leipzig.
In the summer of 2004, a jury compiled an exemplary selection of works,
a panorama of 59 historic but also current works ranging from 1963 up to
the present. This initial, overview-oriented selection will now travel
as an archive to several locations in a concerted action, exhibited at
the same time by the five participating museums. Apart from this, each
museum presents its own focal point as an expansion and contextualizing
of these videotapes. The spectrum of these exhibitions embraces the
“1960s” (Bremen), the “1980s” (Düsseldorf) as well as the present
“Update 06” (Munich). Handled at two locations is a “revision” of the
selection – in light of the chosen artists from the former GDR
(Leipzig), and with regard to the existing collection of Video Art and
restoration practices (Karlsruhe). From the standpoints of form and
content, this allows the concert of thematic focal points to investigate
the conditions of an historic and
present-day exhibiting potential and the relevance of Video Art.
Accompanying this initiative-project of the German Federal Cultural
Foundation is a comprehensive, full-color catalog edited by Rudolf
Frieling and Wulf Herzogenrath, and published by Hatje Cantz Verlag,
which includes excerpts of all the works on a DVD-ROM. For copyright
reasons, the DVD Study Edition, including all the works in
their full length, is only available to institutions in the fields of
education, teaching, and research, and can soon be ordered via the

With video sculptures and environments, the Kunsthalle Bremen showcases
the first experimental and creative phase of Media Art in the 1960s: on
display are important groups of work by Nam June Paik, Wolf Vostell,
Joseph Beuys, and Karl Gerstner as well as background material on the
first TV productions by Otto Piene, Aldo Tambellini, Gerry Schum, and
others. With Paik’s video synthesizer from 1969, included in the
Kunsthalle Bremen’s collection since 1965, the “Gutenberg Bible of the
Twentieth Century“ is also represented in the Bremen show.

The Düsseldorf exhibition concentrates on various artistic approaches to
video practice in the 1980s in West Germany. Significant in this decade
is the accomplished development from the TV-monitor presentation to the
installation. On the threshold to digital image production, video
establishes itself as an artistic image-making process and is
simultaneously used for documental recording purposes. Shown here are
selected examples of Video Art of the 1980s in their originally
developed presentation formats. The exhibition includes works by a.o.

Regarding the selected artists and the historic context, the edition
«40yearsvideoart.de» concentrates on West Germany. Yet extensive work in
Media Art also occurred in the GDR. Filmmakers produced 8/16mm films.
Unofficially, original productions were completed. An independent art
language developed as a phenomenon parallel to Video Art in the Federal
Republic of Germany. The exhibition project undertakes a revision of the
turbulent and creative 1980s in the 8/16mm film scene of the GDR, and
includes works by a.o. Lutz Dammbeck, Else Twin Gabriel, Jörg Herold,
Via Lewandowsky, Yana Milev, Ulrich Polster. A selection of ‘underground
films’ are shown at accompanying events. Talks with artists and
contemporary witnesses reflect the works in their context.

The exhibition at ZKM presents the entire edition, supplemented by the
focus on restoration and conservation as well as by technical background
information on protecting early Video Art. The emphasis here lies on the
1960s and 1970s, since videotapes from this period are especially
endangered. Authentic devices from the early 1970s are displayed.
Likewise on display are examples of restorative practices, by way of
works shown in their original and restored digital formats. In addition,
the exhibition presents works not seen in this form since the 1970s, and
these enjoy a restaging for the first time at ZKM.

The publication offers a comprehensive overview on historical as well as
current tendencies in Video Art, including the early beginnings in film
and television and featuring fifty-nine individual art works produced in
Germany. The catalogue is accompanied by a DVD with excerpts of all
works and additional material related to the context
of the artists‘ work. Texts by historians, curators, and philosophers
reflect on historical and theoretical reviews of current strategies
involving moving images including also issues of the presentation,
conservation and restoration of Video Art.
