Radio_Copernicus-Archives at Media Library/ZKM Karlsruhe The mobile German-Polish Artists Radio Station gets a new Home Starting on April 28th 2006, the audio archives from Radio_Copernicus, the independent and mobile German-Polish Artists Radio Station will be accessible to the public as a permanent exhibit in ZKM/Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe. Nearly the entire program that ran on air for almost six months from July until December 2005 in Polish, German and English can now be selected and heard at the Media Library at ZKM Karlsruhe. Not only is it possible to research artists, program content, background information, time slots and dates on site, but also on the internet (under www.radio-c.zkm.de). The visitors of the ZKM can lean back comfortably in the listening-chairs (by Dieter Mankau for documenta 8)at the ZKM Media Library and listen to the numerous artist’s talks, readings, soundscapes, interviews, live-sessions as well as the 27 commissioned works of the artists radio station. Under the direction of Professor Sabine Breitsameter (Professor of Experimental Audiomedia/Berlin University of the Arts) with the support of the Polish project-coordinator, Robert Gawlowski (University of Wroclaw), and a team of approximately 50 people, a program was realized this past year that until now had been unheard of on any other radio station. Related to current development in media arts and electronic culture, Radio_Copernicus dedicates itself especially to radio art, electro-acoustic art forms, live performances, new literature as well as current cultural and societal debates and discourses. The main focus of the program is the 27 commissioned works given explicitly to chosen artists such as Robert Piotrowicz, Zbigniew Karkowski, Guy van Belle, ElletroVoce, Duo Merzouga, the artists group LIGNA, Stefano Giannotti. About 200 media artists, people who work in radio, producers, technicians, and organizers collectively developed Radio_Copernicus into a broadcast station that implements an innovative cultural radio concept. This has happened not only through its program content from pop to “high culture”, including the entire range of sophisticated artistic radio work, but above all through its unconventional discourse and presentation forms. Professor Sabine Breitsameter, “The positive and enthusiastic reactions from artists and listeners show how great the need is for an innovative, and at the same time, artistically sophisticated radio on both sides of the border. Because the audio archives of Radio_Copernicus will be open to the public regardless of the broadcasting time in ZKM, our project gains in having a long-term effect.” Radio_Copernicus, the independent German-Polish Artists Radio, ran from July 15th till December 31st 2005 on local and temporary FM frequencies as well as worldwide via Live-Stream in German, Polish and English 24 hours daily. The mobile station operated between the two neighboring countries. It moved from its first location in Stralsund (July/August 2005) to Warsaw (September 2005), then to Berlin (October 2005) and finally to Wroclaw (December 2005). Radio_Copernicus cooperated with the “garage” Festival in Stralsund, the “Warsaw Autumn”, the series of events, “Dis_Positionen” (Academy of the Arts Berlin) and “Talking Back to Radio – Radio as listener- Artyści zmieniają radio“ at the University of Wroclaw as well as at numerous local institutions. Radio_Copernicus was based at Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) (Experimental Audiomedia/Sound Studies) and collaborated the Department of Journalism and Social Communications at Wrocław University/Poland. April 2006 ist das Audio-Archiv von Radio_Copernicus, dem unabhängigen und mobilen deutsch-polnischen Künstlerradio, als Dauerexponat im ZKM Karlsruhe öffentlich zugänglich. Nahezu das gesamte Programm, das während der knapp sechsmonatigen Sendezeit von Juli bis Dezember 2005 auf Polnisch, Deutsch und Englisch on air ging, kann dann in der Mediathek des ZKM Karlsruhe ausgewählt und angehört werden. Sowohl vor Ort als auch über das Internet (unter: www.radio-c.zkm.de) ist es möglich, Künstler, Sendeinhalte, Hintergrundinformationen, Sendeplatz und -datum zu recherchieren. Die Besucher des ZKM können sich in den komfortablen Hörsesseln der ZKM-Mediathek bequem zurücklehnen und den zahlreichen Künstlergesprächen, Lesungen, Soundscapes, Interviews, Live-Sessions sowie den 27 Auftragswerke des Künstlerradios konzentriert zuhören. Unter der Leitung von Prof. Sabine Breitsameter (Professorin für Experimentelle Klanggestaltung/Universität der Künste Berlin) mit Unterstützung des polnischen Projekt-Koordinators Robert Gawlowski (Universität Wroclaw) realisierte ein ca. 50-köpfiges Team im vergangenen Jahr ein Programm, das so bislang in keinem anderen Radio zu hören war: Anknüpfend an aktuelle Entwicklungen in Medienkunst und elektronischer Kultur widmete sich Radio_Copernicus insbesondere der Radiokunst, elektroakustischen Kunstformen, Live-Performances, junger Literatur sowie aktuellen kulturellen und gesellschaftlichen Debatten und Diskursen. Im Mittelpunkt des Programms standen 27 Auftragswerke, die gezielt an ausgewählte Künstler vergeben wurden, z.B. an Robert Piotrowicz, Zbigniew Karkowski, Guy van Belle, ElletroVoce, Duo Merzouga, die Künstlergruppe LIGNA, Stefano Giannotti u.a. Rund 200 Medienkünstler, Radiomacher, Produzenten, Techniker und Organisatoren entwickelten gemeinsam Radio_Copernicus zu einem Sender, der ein innovatives Kulturradio-Konzept realisierte. Dies nicht nur durch seine Programminhalte, die von Pop bis „Hochkultur“ die gesamte Palette anspruchsvoller, künstlerischer Radioarbeit umfassten, sondern darüber hinaus durch unkonventionelle Diskurs- und Präsentationsformen. Prof. Sabine Breitsameter: „Die positiven, zuweilen enthusiastischen Reaktionen von Künstlern und Hörern zeigen, wie groß das Bedürfnis nach einem innovativen und gleichzeitig künstlerisch anspruchsvollen Radio diesseits und jenseits der Grenze ist. Indem das Audio-Archiv von Radio_Copernicus im ZKM über den Sendezeitraum hinaus öffentlich zugänglich wird, gewinnt unser Projekt Langzeitwirkung.“ Radio_Copernicus, das unabhängige, deutsch-polnische Künstlerradio, war vom 15. Juli bis zum 31. Dezember 2005 auf lokalen und temporären UKW-Frequenzen und weltweit via Live-Stream auf Deutsch, Polnisch und Englisch täglich 24 Stunden zu empfangen. Der Sender agierte mobil zwischen den beiden benachbarten Ländern. Von seinem ersten Standort Stralsund (Juli/August 2005) zog es nach Warschau (September 2005), dann nach Berlin (Oktober 2005) und schließlich nach Wroclaw (Dezember 2005). Radio_Copernicus kooperierte mit dem „garage“-Festival Stralsund, dem „Warschauer Herbst“, der Veranstaltungsreihe „Dis_Positionen“ (Akademie der Künste Berlin) und „Talking Back to Radio – Radio als Zuhörer – Artyści zmieniają radio“ an der Universität Wroclaw und zahlreichen lokalen Veranstaltern. Projektträger war die Universität der Künste Berlin (Sound Studies/Experimentelle Klanggestaltung) in Zusammenarbeit mit der Universität Wroclaw (Fachbereich Journalismus und Gesellschaftskommunikation). Das Projekt fand im Rahmen von Büro Kopernikus statt. Büro Kopernikus ist eine Initiative der Kulturstiftung des Bundes.
