Currently, Roller's front-page doesn't adequately support the needs of a community of communities, like blogs.sun.com or the JRoller Java community. It's not possible to filter entries displayed by category or language. It's not easy to find bloggers. Hot blogs and Technorati rankings aren't the best indications of hot topics and ongoing discussions. Plus, the front page is inflexible. You have to hack Java and JSP to change it. That makes it difficult to temporarily change the front page of a Roller site to reflect some ongoing community event, like a blog carnival or a product launch.

This proposal addresses these problems by 1) changing the main page of Roller to be a weblog so it can be easily customized like any other blog and 2) adding new page models to allow display of pageable listings of blog entries filtered by category, planet group entries, comments, weblogs and users, plus user profile pages -- all within the front-page blog.
