Install the packages for gcc. RH 7.2 setup allows for you to be able to
go through and modify the settings with the initial install CD's I
believe, or to update it, without upgrading per se. If not, you'll have
a lot of work ahead of you.
Not only will you need the gcc libs (common c libraries) installed, but
you will also need the libraries required by gcc. With Slackware, it's
as easy as using packagetool to add a separate package entirely (or in
this case a set of them), with RH, unfortunately, rpm's rater picky
about having packages set in a specific order.

Go buy a good Linux manual. There's plenty of them out there.. Since
you're running RH, I believe there's a manual called RedHat for dummies
(no offense meant, it's the series title, and it's a damn well written
series). You should also grab a System Admin manual (again, look for the
dummies series, I think there's one out there for SysAdmin), because
A> root should NEVER be running a mud, game, or anything of the like.
B> if you're having problems with common libraries such as gcc and the
like, you'll probably have problems in the future.

Solution(s):
A> if this is a fresh install (just put on the computer), you can go
through and reinstall with little problem. I believe RH 7.xx allows you
the option of choosing what kind of server you want to install at the
beginnin. Go with a development server ( I forget all of the choices to
be honest). IF you don't know what you're doing, don't customize the
install, or you run the risks of missing something you critically need.
B> if this isn't a fresh install, go through, try to update the settings
(pop cd 1 in, reboot and see if you can update the install, simply by
adding in the packages you need.
C> use slackware: Slackware is a MUCH more newbie friendly distro of
linux, while RH can be complicated to set up at times. If I had to start
from scratch again, with nothing but RH, I probably wouldn't have
bothered setting up Linux at all..
