Fellow Rom/Coders,

Many of you know me by my snippets, and some of my posts over the years. I
am The Mage (Winston) and Owner of The Mage's Lair MUD. Recently we have
had
a serious incident which is now demanding that I ask for advice and help.

The following is a message posted by my Co-Owner of TML on TMC and we have
not had answers. I have heard that Medivia (at one time called MidThevia)
was accused of
stealing code. I wish to know what happened to them (If anyone knows the
history). I
do request your help at this time.

Hi folks.

I'm co-owner of The Mage's Lair mud. We recently had a
backup version of our mud (a ROM derivative) stolen by
someone whom, up to that point, we had trusted with a
shell account. We have various logs and confessions
proving who stole the codebase. We also know that a
few copies were distributed to the thief's friends.
While no new muds have appeared with our codebase as
yet, what we are concerned about is that fragments of
our copyrighted code may be incorporated into other
muds. In particular, the person who stole our code
runs a mud, and it could be very difficult to
determine if fragments of our code were incorporated
into that mud.

At the moment, we are considering legal action for at
least the theft of intellectual property and possibly
copyright violations if applicable. I know of a lawyer
who may be able to assist us in this matter or at
least refer us to someone who could. What I want to
ask you all is if any of you have been in similar
situations and have investigated this further than we
have yet to and what you may have found. Have any of
you ever gone through with pursuing legal action of
this sort? What were your experiences? Did you win a
claim? If any of you have any advice on how we might
proceed, other than just talking with the lawyer, we
would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.
