Rogue uses the 'next room over' style map (which is probably the best thing to do since you don't really have to worry about self-linking rooms and the like). But this 5 x 5 room map you saw was probably some form of wilderness mapping system. If not, they more than likely have either A) bugs with self- linking, variable distance exit rooms or B) they simply tell the builders not to build areas of that nature.
