How about something like this:

sprintf( buf, "$n gives you %d $p.", number );
act( buf, ch, obj, victim, TO_VICT );

and the like for the various act()'s. That way you retain act()'s ability
to hide names of those who are invisible, you get to retain the TO_ROOM and
such.
