Here's a way for you to find out where it's screwing up:
In the load functions, add a log or bug line right before each step the
game takes in loading a character, also add one into other functions that
are called, even if it's just one at the beginning of the function. For
example: bug( "Reading character name.", 0 );

Compile, boot and try to connect. When it crashes, check your log file for
the last step it was trying to do, and there's where the problem is.
