Copyover is the command for a hot reboot in one of the snippets...
i.e. rebooting without disconnecting everyone.

Did you clean compile after you added the fields to the area structure?
Do the logs show anything weird?
It sounds like a problem with area loading if it's segfaulting while booting up.
You should probably do an "asave world" to make sure all of the areas
are saved in the new format.
If you open an area file in an editor after saving it, does everything
look like you would expect it to?

And yes, gdb and core files can be your best friend when the mud is crashing.
