You heard it wrong. Or they said it wrong. Or they said it right
and you interpreted it wrong. Man ascii:

     The octal set:

     The hexadecimal set:
     18 can   19 em    1a sub   1b esc   1c fs    1d gs    1e rs    1f us

     The decimal set:
     24 can   25 em    26 sub   27 esc   28 fs    29 gs    30 rs    31 us

So... Escape is 033 or 0x1b or 27. Not 33, not 027. Not 0x33 nor 0x27.
