BUCHAREST, Romania Romania's nominee
for its representative on the European Union Commission, Varujan Vosganian, on
Saturday announced he has withdrawn his candidacy for the
position.
Vosganian was criticized by European Socialists in recent days
for lacking experience in European affairs and for being a low profile candidate
who was unknown in Brussels.
Vosganian, a liberal lawmaker who chairs the
Senate Budget and Finance committee, was also accused by two national newspapers
of having been an informant for the communist-era secret police, the Securitate.
He denied those accusations and president Traian Basescu has said that Romania's
intelligence agencies told him they found no evidence in their archives that
Vosganian had collaborated with the Securitate.
"Although the accusations
leveled at me proved baseless," he said his validation as European commissioner
could be delayed, "which would harm Romania's image."
Government
spokesman Oana Marinescu said Saturday that Prime Minister Calin Popescu
Tariceanu is consulting with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso
to pick a new candidate to become EU commissioner. All EU members have the right
to send an official to serve on the commission, the bloc's executive
body.
The top candidates for the position are believed to be Deputy
Foreign Minister Leonard Orban, Foreign Minister Mihai Razvan Ungureanu and
Justice Minister Monica Macovei.
Vosganian, 48, who chairs the Senate's
budget and finance committee, is known for supporting free-market policies. He
has also backed his country's flat tax of 16 percent, which Romania introduced
in 2005 to replace a progressive taxation scheme ranging from 18 to 40
percent.
A mathematician and economist, Vosganian is also a writer and
poet. He heads the National Union of (Ethnic) Armenians in Romania. Romania and
Bulgaria are due to join the European Union on Jan. 1.
