Director Nikita Mikhalkov is the special guest of the 2007 B-EST
International Film Festival, scheduled to take place in Bucharest April 14
to 21, organisers announced. Dubbed "Russia's Spielberg," Nikita Mikhalkov
will open the B-EST Festival with "Burnt by the Sun," which won him an
Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1994. Mikhalkov will also
attend the presentation of his films "Statski Sovetnik" (2005) and "Barber
of Siberia" (1998) selected at the director's suggestion.
Also, the filmmaker will answer the audience's questions in a special
session hosted by the Festival, and will run a master-class in Bucharest on
"Two aspects of the directing profession," attended by students and film
professionals.
The third year of the B-EST International Film Festival will include two new
competition categories: documentaries and short films.
Productions presented outside the competitions will complete the Festival
agenda with theme events such as "The seventh universe" (feature-length and
documentaries presented and awarded in international film festivals in 2005
and 2006), "Le Coup de foudre" (section dedicated to French-language films,
organised jointly with the French Institute in Bucharest), "Once we were
birds, Romani Cinema" (a collection of shorts and feature-length films
signed by well-known authors as well as by Rroma producers) and "The Russian
Cut" (productions of the Russian film school). The latter event will include
an Andrei Tarkovsky Retrospective, in his son Andrei Tarkovsky Jr's
presence.
Also invited to the Festival is Russian director and writer Andrei
Konchalovsky, Mikhalkov's older brother, who will conclude the event with
his "House of Fools" ("Dom Durakov," which won him a Silver Lion in the 2002
Venice Film Festival).
